Stimulants can speed up body functions, excite neural activity, increase self confidence levels, and incur mood changes.

Stimulants include caffeine and nicotine, as well as drugs such as dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate, and they are most commonly used to counteract lethargy, and to keep someone awake or to treat narcolepsy.

They act similarly to neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine, and because of this, they can enhance their effects in the brain.
