Moon is a sphere and is always lit by Sun light ..So 50% of its surface is always illuminated,.

Explanation:

But from Earth we do not see all these 50% always. Depend upon the earth/moon position we see only part of this lit portion.On full moon night we see 50% of the lit sursface and on new moon we do not see moon.
So in between Full moon and new moon we see different phases of Moon.See picture.enter image source here
