The success, or lack thereof of social relationships, can both indirectly and directly affect stress.

We live in an increasingly connected world. For the most part, humans want to be connected to others. Without that connection, or relationship with others, we can feel lonely and/or stressed for a number of reasons.
On the flip side, success with social relationships can help ease stress. Friends and family can help ease burdens and relieve stress.
