The bubonic plague is caused by a species of bacteria called Yersenia pestis .

Explanation:

Parasitic insects, such as rat fleas feed on the blood of infected rodents, and then the bacteria reproduce inside the flea, and can then be passed on to humans when they are bitten by the infected fleas (or other insects). Bubonic plague still occurs today, although it is rare, and can still be deadly, but it can be treated successfully with antibiotics if caught early.
