Yugoslavia.

Explanation:

Yugoslavia was a product of the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empires after World War 1. In many ways its boundaries were artificial.

After World War 2, it was held together by the strength of Tito. However after he died and as the status quo of post war Europe disintegrated with the collapse of the Soviet Union and communism, the fragility of the ethnic differences within Yugoslavia became apparent. In the ensuing violence and civil wars the country disintegrated and over half a million people lost their lives.
