What did Alvin York do to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor?

He captured a large number of machine guns and prisoners including a Battalion commander. Some he captured single handedly.


Alvin consider becoming a conscientious objector when he was drafted. He had been a violent drunk in his earlier life but had a conversion to a non-violent christian lifestyle. He had a number of opportunities to evade the draft still continued in the Army and overseas in the end.

His actions during the Meuse-Argonne offensive in World War 1 France earned him the Medal of Honor and the Croix de Geurre.

He was a marksman. He is credited with capturing 132 prisoners and 35 machine guns and killing about 25 enemy soldiers in one days fight.

York did a lot of charity work after the War but still struggled with money.
