The Missouri Compromise showed that the United States could not continue to be half free and half slave politically.

Explanation:

The Missouri Compromise provided the Northern Free States with a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This ended decades of a carefully preserved balance between slave states and free states in the Senate. The political power was shifted to the free states.

At the same time the Missouri Compromise combined with the Dread Scott decision showed the northern free states that slavery could not be legally exclude from any part of the United States.
