The petitioned him to not use the Atomic bomb.

Explanation:

Many of the scientists on the Manhattan Project easily foresaw what the future would look like should Truman choose to use the Atomic bomb. The bomb was actually ready to use while the U.S. was still fighting Germany. But Roosevelt's death at about the time Germany surrendered coupled with Truman's complete ignorance of the project delayed all actions.

What Truman saw was a million American soldiers dying in an invasion of Japan which he could not tolerate.
