A black dwarf is a white dwarf that has cooled down substantially and is no longer visible.

Explanation:

A white dwarf does not have any internal source of heat, but is shining only because it is still hot. Its cooling depends upon its mass, composition and initial temperature. Once a white dwarf cools down to the same temperature as the cosmic microwave background, it is no longer visible and is called a black dwarf.
