Endocarditis is an inflammation of the endocardium.

Explanation:

The endocardium is the thin and smooth membrane that lines the inner surfaces of the heart chambers and also the valves.

Usually, inflammation of the endocardium is rare since the blood stream takes care of bacterial infection, but for some reasons (such as damage to a heart valve) bacterial growth takes place and endocarditis results.
