What does the azimuthal quantum number describe?

1 Answer

The azimuthal quantum number ( l ) is often called the angular momentum quantum number. It tells you which sublevel an electron is located in.

If the azimuthal (angular) number is the electron is in a sublevel.

l = 0 means the electron is in an s sublevel
l = 1 means the electron is in a p sublevel
l = 2 means the electron is in a d sublevel
l = 3 means the electron is in an f sublevel
