The earth is broken into many pieces

Explanation:

The theory of plate tectonics postulates that the earth is composed of moving tectonic plates.

The theory postulates that at one time all the continental crust of the earth was connected in one giant continent called Pangea. The convection current in the mantle are thought to move the continents apart. A rising current in the mantle crates a rift valley as the crust is pushed apart in two different directions. The rift valley increases in size until it becomes an ocean. This creates two parts of crust where only one existed before.

The action of the movement of the convection currents according to the theory of plate tectonics has broken the earth's surface into multiple plates or pieces. These plates make up both contents and oceans. Subduction zones are places where ocean plates are destroyed as the ocean plates are pulled, pushed under continental plates and are melted into the mantle. Mid Ocean ridges are places where new crust is created.
