There are a number of possible answers.

Explanation:

One could argue that it was the allied landings in Sicily in July 1943 (Operation Husky) which saw the beginning of a land liberation. The allies then worked their way up through Italy meeting fierce German resistance.

The most common answer is D Day (Operation Overlord) on June 6th 1944 which saw allied landings on 5 Normandy beaches. This would began a process of liberation from the West which ended 11 months later with the defeat of Germany.
