After Pearl Harbor, Japan successfully attacked many areas in Asia. The defense of the Philippines went badly, including the defense of the Bataan Peninsula. The survivors were force marched into captivity.

Explanation:

The plan for the defense of the Philippines included a plan for holing up in the Bataan Peninsula as a last stand. The plan was to hold for up to 6 months. Vital supplies to accomplish this had been diverted to other areas. Although the defense lacked sufficient supplies it managed to hold out for 3 months.

The survivors were rounded up and marched to distant POW camps. Lack of food and water, abuse, neglect, and massacre caused the deaths of many POWs. Many died in the camps afterward.
