The Allies had broken the Axis codes.

Explanation:

Through much of World War 2 the Allies had broken the "Enigma" Machine codes which the Germans (and some Japanese)used extensively for communication. This knowledge was carefully guarded throughout the war and afterward, only became widely known in the 1970s.
