Explanation:

Seven states seceded from the Union(South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, etc). It was due to the unfair tariffs which the Lincoln Administration intended to enact(Southern states had to pay over 80% of federal tax though they represented 30% of the population) it became known as the Morrill tariff. Abraham Lincoln needed money for his project of transcontinental railroad which explains why a 1862 act was passed to enact its construction in the middle of a conflict.

Officially Slavery was pointed at as the main reason yet Abraham Lincoln explicitly said in his inauguration address that he would not prohibit slavery. Moreover 94% of whites did not own slaves which means slavery could not be the reason behind the war. The whole South coalesced after the Northern Aggression in Fort Sumter on April 12th 1861, some slave states remained faithful to the Union(Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia seceded from Virginia.)
