The British won the Battle of Bunker Hill but at such a cost that they could not continue the campaign against the American Rebels.

Explanation:

Actually the Battle of Bunker Hill was fought at Breed's Hill a lower elevation at the base of Bunker Hill.

The British regulars stormed up the steep slope of Breed's Hill expecting the untrained American troops to scatter. Instead the American militia stood their ground inflecting serious casualties on the British troops. The British took the Breed's Hill but could not continue their advance because of the loses sustained.

The British won the Battle but failed to break the siege of the Americans on Boston. In effect though the British won the battle it was actually a victory for the Americans.

A footnote Dr. Warren one of the leaders of American Revolution was killed in the battle. Dr Warren was appointed as a general in charge of the battle, but stating his lack of military experience choose to fight as an infantry man in the battle. His example in standing his ground and fighting until he was killed helped to inspire the other soldiers. His death was a great lost to the rebellion.
