It became a communist state.

Explanation:

On October 1st 1949, Mao Ze Dong declared the establishment of the Communist government of China.

This was the result of a bitter civil war with the Nationalists (Kuomintang) led by Chiangmai Kai Shekh. This war had been fought since the 1920's and they also had to fight the Japanese.

The Nationalists fled to Taiwan and were recognised as the legitimate government of China until the 1970's.

The coming to power of Mao was very significant in Cold War politics and was viewed with alarm if not paranoia by the USA.
