In 1992 a major financial crisis struck the country and the majority of the population fell under the poverty line for the first time since 1917. In 1993 Yeltsin privatized the main sectors of the Russian economy(in the energy sector for insance) transfering it to the hands of seven main oligarchs close to the City of London.

Putin presidency saw the end of this economic slump and a major economic recovery occurred.
