# What ions result when water is split?

Hydrogen ions (${H}^{+}$) and Hydroxyl ions ($O {H}^{-}$).
When water is split, using an electrolyte and electrodes, initially Hydrogen ions (${H}^{+}$) or protons and Hydroxyl ions ($O {H}^{-}$) are produced.
These gravitate to the respective electrodes where ${H}_{2}$ and ${O}_{2}$ molecules (gas) are formed.
