# What is (1/2)^2?

When you square a number, you are multiplying it times itself. Since the exponent 2 is outside of the parentheses, you need to square the entire fraction $\frac{1}{2}$. When multiplying fractions, you multiply the numerators and the denominators.
${\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)}^{2}$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ x $\frac{1}{2}$ = $\frac{1}{4}$
