Contaminated air stays for a long time over a city

Explanation:

Under inversion, contaminants (in air) cannot go beyong the blanket over a city. This blanket is not a physical one, it is a hotter air layer above a city that keeps contaminated air staying underneath of it. A city (with its power plants, cars, motor vehicles, heating system smokestacks, etc.) is a source of air pollutants.

These air pollutants tend to disperse since they are exhausted with hot temperature. But if there is a hotter layer above a city, or area, these contaminants cannot go beyong the hot layer and they stay and accumulate underneath of it until the circumstances change.
