Mechanical waves are waves that require a material medium to transmit its energy.


This includes sound waves. You'd notice that in a vacuum, sound isn't transmitted. That's why astronauts can't talk and hear each other using sound waves.

Other example would be water waves and seismic waves. They need a medium to propagate.
