# What is beta plus?

Beta particles are electrons or positrons (positively charged electrons, also called antielectrons). In beta plus decay, a proton decays into a neutron, a positron, and a neutrino: $\text{p"^(+)}$$\rightarrow$${\text{n"^(0)" + e}}^{+} + {\nu}_{e}$. This type of decay decreases the atomic number by $1$, but does not change the mass number.
