Glasnost means transparency in Russian and it meant that individual liberties were finally protected in the USSR, freedom of speech was guaranteed at last. It was a clear rupture with the repression that had been dominant since the inception of the Soviet Union. It was introduced after 1985 by Gorbachev after he became the leader of the Soviet Union.
