Explanation:

"Pollution" is anything detrimental to the normal ecosystem. "Wastes" are not necessarily polluting unless they exceed the ecosystems natural processes for recycling them in normal time-frames.
Pollution can severely harm and even destroy an ecosystem, which may take years to recover, if recovery is even possible.
