The South was dominated by a class of Southern planters who despised the industrial sector.

The opposition between the North and the South was not only between slavery and freedom, it was also betwen industry and agriculure.

Just like Jefferson, the Southern planters had a pastoral ideal. The Dixiecrats(aristocrats of Dixie) did not want to see their traditional activity threatened.
