Immunity achieved by introduction of antibodies in form of antisera or naturally into the body is called passive immunity.

Explanation:

The effect of passive immunity is immediate but is not long-lasting. It effect remains till antibodies remain in blood. As soon as they are used up, it's effect diminishes.

  • Mostly passive immunity is achieved by artificial means i.e when antisera(serum containing antibodies) being harvested from other human or animal is injected into person to cope temporarily with specific infection.

  • In some cases, passive immunity may be naturally induced e.g immunity acquired by foetus who receive maternal antibodies that are passed either from placenta or breast milk.

The method of passive immunization is mostly used to combat active infections i.e tetanus, rabies, snake bite venom etc...

Hope it helps...
