What is the Arthus reaction?

The Arthus reaction is a kind of local type III hypersensitivity reaction and involves the deposition of antigen / antibody complexes in the vascular walls, serosa and glomeruli.

Explanation:

The insitu formation of antigen / antibody complexes after the intra dermal injection of an antigen occurs in such cases. Arthur's reaction occurs if the patient is previously sensitised.

It manifests as local vasculitis due to deposition of Ig G based immune complexes in dermal blood vessels.
The symptoms usually occur 4 to 12 hours after vaccination.
