Breathing is the source of Oxygen used in cellular respiration and the means of removing Carbon Dioxide used in cellular respiration.

Explanation:

Breathing is often incorrectly called respiration, or respirating. This is not a precise use of the word, though breathing is part of respiration.

Respiration, more precisely cellular respiration is the process by which cells use Oxygen to burn sugar in order to create energy that the cell can use.

The equation for cellular respiration is

6 #O_2# + 1 #C_6H_12O_6# == #6CO_2# + #6H_2O# + 36 ATP

(ATP is a common energy molecule used by cells.)

So breathing is part of respiration in that it provides the Oxygen needed for respiration which is the burning of sugar for energy.
