Mean, when referring to arithmetic mean, is the same as average. It is computed by adding the values and dividing by the number of values. However, there are three different types of averages: mean, median, and mode. The median is the middle number in an ordered set of numbers and the mode is the number that appears most in a set of numbers. In general, the word average refers to arithmetic mean, though it is actually any way to compute the central or typical value in a set of data.
