The hepatic portal vein has blood that is deoxygenated because oxygen left the blood in the capillaries of the digestive tract. The blood, however,contains materials, such as nutrients, absorbed from the digestive tract. These absorbed materials leave the blood in the capillaries of the liver and are processed.
