What is the importance of glycolysis?
The importance of glycolysis is to take glucose and break it down into 2 pyruvate molecules, 2 NADH molecules (electrons carrier important in the Krebs cycle), and 2 ATP.
The cells need to oxidize pyruvate into acetyl CoA then take acetyl CoA into the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain to produce more ATP.
Note: Glycolysis is anaerobic it does not require oxygen but the other stages in cellular respiration do require oxygen.
Note: ATP is produced in glycolysis by substrate-level phosphorylation. This means a phosphate group is coming off from a reactant (substrate) and it's combining with ADP to produce ATP.
