The limbic system combines higher mental functions and primitive emotions into one system, often referred to as the emotional nervous system.

Explanation:

The primary structures within the limbic system includes the amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, basal ganglia and cingulate gyrus.

The limbic system is often linked to olfaction, emotions, psychotic symptoms and cognitive defects. The functional relevance of the limbic system has proven to serve many different functions such as affects, emotions, memory, sensory processing, time perception, attention, consciousness, instincts, autonomic control and motor behaviour.

It is also tightly connected to the prefrontal cortex, which is related to the pleasure obtained from solving problems.
Some of the disorders associated with the limbic system are epilepsy and schizophrenia.
