Different forms of same gene are called alleles. An individual diploid organism always possesses two doses of the same gene, i.e. two alleles on its pair of homologous chromosomes.

Explanation:

Alleles are responsible for determining phenotype of a particular character; may be colour of a flower or colour of human eye. One allele may be dominant on the other. Different alleles may interact and modify the phenotype due to incomplete dominance or codominance.
