The pigmentation of the skin is determined by a protein called melanin.

Melanin is produced by specialized cells called melanocytes located in the Germinative Layer of the epidermis. Melanin then sets in the Layer of Dying Cells as they lose water and form the Cornfield Layer of the epidermis.
