To make food for the plant.

Explanation:

Photosynthesis is the process of green plants and some prokaryotes (cyanobacteria) producing glucose and oxygen gas from carbon dioxide and water, in the presence of sunlight.

The balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis is:

#6CO_2(g)+6H_2O(l)stackrel"sunlight"stackrel"chlorophyll"->C_6H_12O_6(aq)+6O_2(g)#

Later on, glucose #(C_6H_12O_6)# is further broken down into pyruvate #(CH_3COO^-)# and then into #ATP#. To release that energy from the phosphate bonds in #ATP#, the molecule must be further broken down into #ADP#.

But, the main purpose of photosynthesis is to make food and produce energy for the plant.
