# What is the substance that is dissolved in a solution?

$\text{Sugar, salt, chocolate powder?}$
A $\text{solution}$ consists of a dissolving medium, the $\text{solvent}$, and the dissolved species, the $\text{solute}$. Solutions can be gaseous (for instance the air we breathe), liquid (i.e. usually a solid solute dissolved in a solvent such as water or ethanol), and solid (for instance metal alloys).
