It is only a theory that the Lake Toba eruption almost wiped out the human race.
Explanation:
About 80,000 years ago a volcano erupted in Indonesia. Based on the ash layer found around Asia, this eruption was the largest one in the past 25,000,000 years.
Around this time there appears to be a reduction in genetic diversity for human beings, supporting the idea that the human race was reduced to only a few tens of thousands. It appears there could be a connection.
The problem with the theory, however, is that no other species had the same genetic reduction and volcanoes do not specifically effect only one species.
