What led France and Britain to declare war against Germany to begin World War ll?

I am a bit rusty here but if I remember correctly England and France where bound, through a treaty, to intervene to protect Poland in case of an invasion of her territory.

Explanation:

This is a bit strange anyway because Poland was yes invaded firstly by the Germans but almost immediately the Russians invaded her as well from the East.

Probably England and Frand should have declared war to USSR as well but I think they probably....forgot!
