The deployment of Soviet missiles on Cuba led to a stand off between the USA and Soviet Union. It was the closest the superpowers came to nuclear war.

Initially Khrushchev refused to back down as Kennedy imposed a naval blockade. However the Soviet leader eventually did back down. Kennedy emerged with an enhanced reputation after a series of failures both international and domestic, for example The Bay of Pigs fiasco. Khrushchev was removed from power and replaced by Leonard Brezhnev.
