It had a number of effects.

Explanation:

In the immediate, the Soviet leader Khrushchev lost his gamble and was ousted shortly afterwards, and Kennedy achieved global status.

In the long term the consequences stemmed from the reality experienced by the superpowers that they had very nearly gone to war which would have led almost certainly to man's destruction.

As a result it marked the beginning of detente which went through a number of stages culminating in the collapse of the Soviet Union and communism from 1989 onwards.

After Cuba attempts were made to avoid such an escalation. A Hot Line was established between the Kremlin and the White House. The Test Ban Treaty was signed. later in the 70's and 80's a whole raft of disarmament talks were held and treaties signed such as SALT 1 and SALT 2.
