They were organisations based round the Palestinian objective of an independent state in the Middle East.

Explanation:

There has been a myriad of groups and splinter groups. Collectively many were under the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organisation). The largest of these was Al Fatah led by Yasser Arafat.
However within and outwith the PLO there were many other groups who were often bitterly opposed to each other in their attempts to achieve their common goal. These have included the PFLP, the PFLP (General Command) and Black September.
Increasingly with the failure of the PLO to make progress, Palestinians have turned to other groups such as Hamas who now control the West Bank and are still committed to the destruction of Israel.
