Before 1868 Japan's power was divided between the temporal power(the Shogun) and the spiritual power(embodied by the Emperor). The massacre of the Samourais. Meiji put an end to the Shogunate( the military government of the Samourai) and led to the birth of Modern Japan.

It enabled him to industrialize Japan and the latter could become a modern nation just like European nations and the United States.
