The USA underwent a trauma during the Vietnam war because they proved unable to be victorious in that war despite being the first economic and military power in the world. The massive use of napalm and agent orange was meant to counteract the guerrilla style warfare of the Vietcong.

At home a massive anti-war movement made of students and others opposed the escalation. They proved an amazing obstacle to the war effort and the war was finally ended thanks to the domestic opposition at home.
