The building of the Panama Canal

Explanation:

Before the building of the Panama Canal travel between the Caribbean Sea was difficult.
One option was to unload the ships at the Isthmus and portage the goods across the mountains and jungles of Panama. Then the goods and people had to be load on the other side to another ship.

The second option was to sail the ships all the way around South America. This involved braving the dangerous Cape Horn. This trip not involved danger but took a lot of time as well.

The completion of the Panama Canal provide direct access between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, connecting the Eastern United States with the Western United States.
