The Church of the Latter Day Saints commonly known as the Mormons

Explanation:

The early practice of polygamy within the Church of the Latter Day Saints created anger against the Church. When Joseph Smith was killed by a mob the new leader Brigham Young led the members of the religious group to the Great Salt Lake basin. The Utah territory was not under federal law so the church was able to function under its own laws and doctrines.

The saints migrated to the Utah territory some of them pulling hand carts carrying all of their processions. The Saints sent up their own government and society in the valleys on the west side of the Rocky Mountains. In this isolated territory the members of Church of the Latter Day Saints were free to practice their religion without interference from the government and other people.
