The money given by Iran was used to finance the Contras in Nicaragua and the scandal was revealed in 1986, it was called the Irangate.

It led to a massive disapproval of Republicans and Ronald Reagan and Republicans lost the Senate in the midterm elections for the first time since the fifties. Colonel North was the one prosecuted during the scandal.
