Sunlight and water are needed in the light dependent reactions.


Sunlight enters the light reaction and helps to power the Calvin Cycle. Water also enters the light reaction. Hydrogen is removed from the water, which is used in the electron transport chain. What is left is oxygen that is released a by product of photosynthesis.
