What type of blood would be more useful, AB blood, which is rare, or O blood, which is the universal donor? In other words, what are blood banks in greater need of?

Most useful blood is your own blood group.

When blood is required you need your blood group. Blood group O is universal doner and AB blood group person can receive blood of any group is just a clinical compatibility. In blood banks blood of same group is made available.
Blood banks need blood of all groups. There is regional variation in statistics of blood group. A blood group is common in US population. In oriental region B blood group is common. O blood group is having 20% frequency. Same is true with AB.
